Call for Applications: Civil society statements in the regular and reconvened 29th session of the CCPCJ

Deadline for Applications: 25 November 2020 at 11.55 pm CET

The regular and reconvened twenty-ninth session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) will be held from 3 to 4 December 2020 starting at 11 am and 3 pm at the Vienna International Centre, as well as via virtual platform. Due to the use of a virtual interpretation platform, the meetings will only last four hours (instead of six) every day. Furthermore, due to current COVID-19 restrictions only members of the Commission may attend the meeting in person.

As this year the CCPCJ should have followed the Crime Congress, its agenda is quite limited and the regular session will be very short. The reconvened session will start immediately after the regular session and include two joint meetings of the CCPCJ and the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) to be held on 3 December. A separate meeting of the CCPCJ to deal with the Crime Congress and progress on aligning its work with the 2030 Agenda will held in the afternoon of 4 December. The annotated provisional agenda and proposed organization of work can be found on the CCPCJ website.

Letters of invitation for registration have been sent by the Secretariat to NGOs eligible to participate (ECOSOC). In the letter, the Secretariat has indicated that NGOs interested to make a statement should coordinate with the Alliance, as per this paragraph:

“Non-governmental organizations will be allowed to deliver a limited number of interventions. The Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will be asked to hold consultations and inform the secretariat about nominations for statements by non-governmental organizations.”

The Alliance is therefore inviting up to 4 NGOs to make statements under the agenda item of their choosing. Please note that the total number of speaking slots refers to all agenda items. Please also note that each NGO may only take the floor once.

As it is a formal meeting, NGOs will speak at the end related to the chosen agenda item. Each speaker will have maximum 3 minutes to present. Simultaneous interpretation in all official United Nations languages will be provided. The Secretariat has informed us that, in case interpretation time runs out, speakers will be asked to deliver statements in English only, and/or to have them posted on the website. Furthermore, the Chair will cut every statement exceeding 3 minutes.

In order to apply for a speaking slot, please send an email to statements@crimealliance.org

by 25 NOVEMBER 2020 at 11:55 p.m. (CET, Vienna local time) indicating the agenda item you would like to address and the topic of the statement.Selected speakers will be asked to send in their statements or videos (including. transcripts) no later than 30 November 2020. The Alliance will coordinate the selection of speakers on the basis of relevance and diversity. As the coordinating umbrella organization, the Alliance will make sure that its own statement is inclusive of any relevant topics that members indicate as important and needed.

We apologise for the short deadline and hope that many of you will take the opportunity to apply for a speaking slot regardless.

The meeting will be webcast on the CCPCJ website:
